The College of Aeronautics (COA) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University—Worldwide invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair, Department of Aeronautics, Undergraduate Studies. The College seeks a dynamic, nationally recognized academic leader who will partner with the faculty in the successful leadership of the Department or Aeronautics, Undergraduate Studies. This position will be housed at our Worldwide Campus Headquarters in Daytona Beach, FL.

The COA offers 22 academic degrees in disciplines of aeronautics, engineering, safety, human factors, unmanned systems, aviation maintenance, technology, security, and sustainability. Departments in the College are Engineering and Technology, Aeronautics Graduate Studies, Aeronautics Undergraduate Studies, and Flight. The Worldwide campus has an enrollment of 23,000 full-time equivalent students, delivering courses globally online via Canvas, synchronously via EagleVision to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in a blended format. Embry-Riddle Worldwide earned the #1 ranking in 2017 for Best Online Bachelor’s programs from U.S. News & World Report.

The Department of Aeronautics, Undergraduate Studies is the largest department within the University system with 10,061 students, 11 full-time faculty, and 300+ adjunct faculty. The Undergraduate Studies Department supports five academic programs including Aeronautics, Aviation Safety, Aviation Security, Aviation Maintenance, and Unmanned Systems.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University welcomed Dr. P. Barry Butler as its new President in 2017. A major goal of Dr. Butler’s administration is to increase student success and retention. Embry-Riddle Worldwide has fully embraced this goal, with a recent increased focus from Chancellor John Watret on student retention, affiliation, and persistence.

Reporting to the Dean, the Department of Aeronautics, Undergraduate Department Chair will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the development of academic programs in support of the College, Campus, and University mission as well as participating in student recruitment, enrollment and retention efforts as required. He/she will develop and maintain channels of communication with professional groups and industry to ensure programs are providing appropriate educational preparation for the students. The Department Chair will also maintain academic excellence in the College’s teaching and scholarly efforts, to include providing criteria and oversight for approving faculty, evaluating teaching effectiveness, and assessing program effectiveness. He/she will be asked to develop a strong and competent faculty to meet the University curriculum requirements and the high standards of the department, to include the development, evaluation, recruitment/hiring and promotion and tenure of full-time faculty assigned to the department; Coordinate with the appropriate department chairs to ensure that courses offered by the departments meet the requirements of the degree program; be responsible for implementation and supervision of an advisement program for students enrolled in the program; provide academic administration in scheduling courses, assigning faculty, evaluating faculty, ensuring adequate files on courses, etc.; and perform the administrative duties connected with your office and ensure the efficient and effective utilization of University resources through the budget process and salary administration.
